Discussing The Real-World Value Of New 9i and 10g Features
September 20th, 2004 by Mark Rittman
A good discussion on comp.databases.oracle.server on the
real-world value of the new features in Oracle 9i and 10g, including
interesting comments on
comparing 10g and SQL Server 2000,
how useful the new 10g features actually are, and the
potential achilles heel for Oracle that is tuning via the wait interface.

Just a quick comment to explain that I don’t think that tuning via the wait interface is bad per-se, just that if Microsoft ever get their act together and instrument their technology stack for timing information then the Microsoft platform might become highly diagnosable and configurable. The same applies to IBM I guess where they own the entire technology stack. Oracle can’t compete with that - though they could probably co-exist by exposing their timing data to the system architecture.

Hi Niall,
That’s how I read it actually, that if Microsoft got their act together on this it could give them an advantage that Oracle couldn’t match. I’ve amended the words slightly now to emphasise this.
thanks
