December 6th, 2006 by Mark Rittman

Following on from the 10.2.0.3 patch release for Oracle Database 10g, Anthony Waite has just informed us that the 10.2.0.3 release of Analytic Workspace Manager and the Global Sample Schema are now available for download on OTN.

According to Anthony, the new features of this release include:

“* Sparsity Advisor determines which dimensions are sparse, which storage element to use (compression or not), the optimal dimension order, and the optimal partitioning scheme
* Data Viewer now contains formatting and graph options
* Additional solve elements (allocation, forecasting, hierarchical-based definitions) for Calculation Plans
* Non-gregorian support (now level-based in Calc Wizard) for calendar calculations
* Java developers can add custom plug-ins
* Ability to create measure subfolders
* Improved logging”

    I sure wish they would released 10.2.0.3 as a full release instead of a patchset. I like how that was done with 9.2.0.4. It made a lot of sense. In fact, patchsets are so huge any more I wonder why each point release isn’t a full release instead of a patchset. Oh well, I can wish can’t I?

    Totally, I can’t agree more. For each major patch release, they should make the patchset available standalone, plus a re-rolled version of the database. It’d make life a lot easier when installing a new database and you’ve otherwise got to apply the patchset afterwards.
