Ubuntu and Beryl: A healthy breakfast

March 22nd, 2007 by Borkur Steingrimsson

I finished banging Beryl in to my newly installed Ubuntu box last night. I run a dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu 6.10. The mix of IDE and SATA disks made Grub gag a bit but it all went ok in the end. I had previously installed Fedora Core (from 1 to 5) but decided to give Ubuntu a try.

I stumbled up on this link which gave me the idea to give Beryl a try. I had a few issues with the Nvidia drivers, but this how-to solved all my problems. Now I have all sorts of cool animation clogging my screen :)
Without having even googled for it yet, I have some reservations of being able to get a database installed there, but perhaps Wine can handle it? It seems to handle most anything I have thrown at it so far, e.g. Max Payne and Serious Sam run pretty smoothly there.

Hi Borkur (I know how to pronounce it)

I currently run a 10G and an 11G (beta 4) database on my Ubuntu 6.10 laptop (with Beryl on an ATI btw) and it has been a lot easier to set up on Ubuntu then it ever was on Fedora, in my opinion.
Follow the pre installation tasks listed in the official Oracle docs for setting up a linux box to run the database. Any problems that pop up will pop up during the linking phase and are quite easily solved. Google is your friend.
One tip though is to make sure $LD_LIBRARY_PATH includes $/lib.

Oh, and Java Swing (schwingggg) components do not like Beryl very much. Setting $AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit will prevent you from seeing empty dialog windows when running the OUI and any other Java based tools such as the DBCA etc.

And you probably have to set your $DISPLAY=:1.0 for the OUI if you are running Beryl.

So..how about a Scotch or two soon ?

Btw …$LD_LIBRARY_PATH includes $/lib should read:
    … $LD_LIBRARY_PATH includes $YOUR_NEW_ORACLE_HOME/lib.

    Some tags got stripped…:)

    Cheers Ragnar.

Thanks for that one. I will have a look-see tonight :)

    No mention of Scotch though…

Feel free to drop by, anytime :) Scotch shall be had.
