Detailed Configuration Steps for BI Publisher and Discoverer Integration

I’d noticed a couple of comments on this blog, and some others, around the setup steps required for Oracle BI Publisher and Discoverer integration. Setting this up requires quite a few steps in the 10.1.2.2.0 release of Discoverer, which should be made a lot easier in the 10.2.0.3 release, but for now you have to apply a few patches and go through some security configuration steps. One bit that seems to be catching people out is the requirement to configure BI Publisher to use OID as it’s security method, I don’t think this is in the main docs but it won’t work without it.
Anyway, I was discussing this with Mike Durran, the Discoverer Product Manager, and Oracle have come up with a detailed setup document for BI Publisher and Discoverer integration, a collaborative effort between a few consultants, which they’ve kindly agreed to allow me to host on this site – you can download it here. It’s got lots of screenshots, explanations and so on, and whilst I’ve not gone through it myself (I’ve already got it up and running) it does seem to cover off all the required parts, including the BI Publisher / OID setup step. Anyway, download a copy if you’re getting this up and running, it should cover off all the steps you need.

Appendix : Discoverer must be SSO configured with AS
Discoverer MidTier needs to be associated with an Infrastructure inorder to get access to a OID ( BIP needs to be configured with this OID as well). This enables the Disco webservice to accept OID user credentials in its login() API. Enabling SSO on Discoverer MidTier is not a requirement.
Discoverer Webservices is similar to Discoverer Portletprovider i.e both are in sso mode when you use them
In order to use Portletprovider you need to log in to a portal (unless the portlet with public access is published on a public page) similarly inorder to use ie make any useful webservice call you need to perform a login() providing the usercredential.

Thanks for the clarification. So – Disco must be associated with an Infrastucture tier, as it is by default if you install it as part of OAS Enterprise Edition; if you install Discoverer standalone, you need to go through the steps to associate it with an Infrastructure instance.
My memory is a bit vague on this, but can you or can you not have public connections when Disco /isn’t/ within SSO – if not, I think this is also a requirement for BIP/Disco integration, not sure how it would work if this wasn’t in place.
Personally – can’t wait for the 10.2.0.3 release – presumably all of this will be just set up by default ;-)

Disco Webservices is always in SSO in the current 10.1.2.2 patch i.e. it always requires the usercredential in the login() API.
You are right, the setup will be a lot easier in 10.1.2.3 :)

I am trying to get this up and running …. but I seem to have a problem getting the developer rights on BI Publisher. I have followed the instructions given in Jorge’s document to the T. But it seems that I am not able to create reports in BI Publisher.What must I be doing wrong? Any ideas?

Hi,
I’m need to configure Discoverer with BI Publisher, but have a number of questions regarding what are the prerequisites.
I have installed (on a Windows 20003 SP2 env – vmware image).
Oracle BI 10.1.2.1, which consists mainly of Discoverer and Oracle Application Server Control
Oracle BI Publisher Release 10.1.3.2, which was installed as part of my OBI EE install 10.1.3.3. BI Publisher is configured to report against
OBI EE Subject Areas and Answer Request, using Oracle OBI Server Security Model.
Oracle 10gR2 10.2.0.1 is the Db for all repositories/EUL/reporting schemas etc.
I have downloaded patches
p5648158_10122_GENERIC.zip – which is the one off patch for Disco Web Services
OAS_Patch_p4960210_10122_WINNT.zip – which is the patch to bring the OAS upto 10.1.2.2

From what I can understand I need to have OID (Oracle Internet Directory) and the OA Meta Repository already installed and configured, before applying the
OAS patch.
What download can I use to install OID and the OA Meta Repository (which also needs upgrading to 10.1.0.5) only.
I hope this is enough info to get a conversation started, I’m not a OAS person, so take it easy on the techy acronyms.
