ODTUG BI&DW SIG LinkedIn Group – Reminder
March 10th, 2008 by Mark Rittman
Some of you might be aware that apart from chairing the UKOUG Business Intelligence & Reporting Tools SIG, I also co-chair (with Kent Graziano) the Oracle Developer Tools User Group (ODTUG) BI & Data Warehousing SIG, which meets every few months at events such as ODTUG Kaleidoscope, Oracle Open World and so on.
One thing Kent, Mike Riley and I were discussion just prior to the last Open World was how to keep ODTUG BI&DW SIG members in touch between meetings, and an idea we had at the time was to set up a LinkedIn group, as most of us used LinkedIn to keep in touch professionally. However just after we launched the ODTUG BI&DW SIG LinkedIn Group at last year’s Open World, Oracle Mix was announced and I let the LinkedIn idea drop in favour of supporting a single “social networking” venue for SIG members – the Oracle Mix ODTUG BI&DW SIG Group. This has done well and we’ve got around 60 group members now – go and sign up if you’re interested, you don’t even have to be an ODTUG member to take part.
Anyway, over the last few days, by co-incidence, a number of people have contacted me about reviving the LinkedIn Group, as it sort of serves a different purpose to Oracle Mix – Oracle mix is pure “Facebook”-style social networking, whilst LinkedIn is a bit more work and professional-orientated, and is particularly useful if you’re looking to make contact with someone or are looking for your next position. With this in mind, I just thought I’d re-post the details of the group here, and again invite anyone to sign up, even if you’re not a SIG member – we’d be glad to see you along at ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2008 in New Orleans later in the year, if you find it of use though!

Thanks for mentioning Mix. I’d agree that Mix is Facebook-style social networking, minus the zombies, poking and party pictures.
One advantage we do have with Mix is a conduit into product development at Oracle. I think you’ll find development more forthcoming on Mix than on LinkedIn or Facebook simply because it’s hosted and built by Oracle.
Anyway, look for more activity from Oracle on Mix in the near future as more groups embrace it. Also, Paul and I will be at Collaborate, and I’d like to sit down with you to get feedback on Mix and how we can improve it. Let me know if you’re going and when you’re available.
