Stop Press! New Editor for Oracle Scene!

January 5th, 2009 by Mark Rittman

It was the first day back at work today, and I got some early good news in the form of an email from the UKOUG telling me that I’d been elected Editor of Oracle Scene, the UKOUG’s member magazine. Thanks for everyone who voted for me, and I’m looking forward to working alongside Neil Jarvis and Neil Jarvis (Deputy Editors) as well as Iyisha Rocke, Marketing Assistant at the UKOUG.

I’ve been meaning to get more involved with Oracle Scene for a long while; I used to write articles fairly regularly for the magazine but in the past couple of years, I drifted more towards Oracle Magazine, OTN and the ODTUG Technical Journal (where I’m also co-chair of their BI&DW SIG). Oracle Scene is rather special though it covers the complete Oracle industry across the whole of the UK and Ireland, and of course it’s nice to be involved in a publication that covers our home market. I’m also pleased to be continuing as a volunteer with the UKOUG, as I recently only just stepped down from the UKOUG Business Intelligence & Reporting Tools SIG after a few years as Chair.

I’ll try and update the blog over time with some observations on what’s involved in editing a magazine, if anyone’s interested. In addition, if anyone’s interested in writing for Oracle Scene or wants to know more about the UKOUG, just drop me an email; equally, if anyone reading has edited a user group magazine before and has some advice to offer, again I’m all ears.

The only way you could possibly do all the things you do is if you have a time machine. As a matter of a fact, I have never seen you and Dr Who together. Could it be?

congrats. That sounds like a very cool gig. I have no idea what editing a magazine requires.

Thanks everyone, thanks for the good wishes. It’ll be interesting to see how it works out, I suspect I’ve underestimated the time it’ll require to do this, but it’ll be fun actually editing and setting the direction for a real print magazine. I’ll try and post articles every so often about how the process works.

    regards, Mark.
