YouTube Video of my "Oracle BI Apps 7.9.5.2 and ODI" Open World Presentation

October 18th, 2009 by Mark Rittman

If you didn’t make it to Open World but you were interested in my presentation on ODI and the Oracle BI Applications 7.9.5.2, I just noticed that “aortabisolutions” on Youtube recorded some of the highlights and uploaded the video. Here it is here:

If you’re interested in taking a look at the accompanying presentation slides, they’re now available on our articles page along with those from the other sessions. If anyone out there has implemented BI Apps 7.9.5.2 and has some project feedback, I’d be keen to hear from you. In the meantime, thanks to aortabisolutions for uploading the video, and there are some more from us on my YouTube site here.

Oracle ODI vs Oracle Golden Gate

We are about to start a new data warehouse project, which will require a data integration product and have the following questions:

    - ODI provides near real-time data warehousing support: – What is the difference between ODI’s near-realtime data warehousing features and Oracle Golden Gate’s real-time data integration?
    - How does Oracle Golden Gate achieve Real-time Data Integration? (What kind of non-invasive techniquire/procedures/processes does it use to achieve Real-time Data Integration?
    - Obviously with Oracle Golden Gate being the superior Data Integration product, what is the future of ODI?
    - Is there any product convergence planned for ODI and Oracle Golden Gate by Oracle corp. in the near/far future?
    - Most importantly, what product should we use to implement the new project: ODI or Oracle Golden Gate?
    - What is the easier product to learn/implement: ODI or Oracle Golden Gate?

Others, please feel free to add to the above questions/concerns.

    Thanks for all your help.

    Hi Teddy

This is quite a big question and something you’ll need to find out by reading the relevant docs and data sheets. But basically Golden Gate is a command-line set of utilities for moving and replicating data between heterogeneous environments, whilst ODI is a GUI toolkit that does that, but also provides features for graphical data transformation, some data modeling, integration with SOA etc. My understanding is that a future release of ODI will contain the Golden Gate functionality, so in terms of which product will be strategic, the answer is “both of them”, Golden Gate will become a feature of ODI (as well as still being available standalone).

    regards, Mark

I have a blog in preparation on realtime data warehousing – this is tied into the presentation I will be giving at Collaborate 10 in Las Vegas in April.

But as Mark mentions GoldenGate is about replicating all or part of a source system to another location. So it has the ability to replicate data or to push it around into tables, flat files, XML messages and the like. Although GoldenGate allows you to filter the data being moved it is not an ETL tool – there is still a place for ODI or OWB in that role.

The change data capture modules in ODI or OWB 11gR2 are use ‘out of the box’ database functionality such as Oracle synchronous and asynchronous change data capture – they work well but you may need to do some additional work with them. GoldenGate uses its own methods to mine redo-log files and propagate the changes

    Hello Mark!

Thanks for the Blog and all your texts so far. You sure helped with some things while configuring BIAPPS. I have installed this version of BIAPPS with ODI, and had many problems getting any data in the predefined reports. I only loaded financial data into the DWH and had to change the reports a bit to get some data. I used our demo eBS instance as OLTP. I had real problems (and still do) instaling Configuration manager. It still to this day shows question marks in around every text in the front end (???really strange???). Nevertheless I did manage to see some reports and feel the system out. At the moment I am trying to find out the steps to, without going into a new installation, change the OLTP data source (connection pool) to get the new data from a different OLTP source (new eBS instace). Is this wise and what do you suggest (Steps) I should do in order to get the new data up and running in BIAPPS? Cheers, Portisto
