Upgrading OBIEE to 11.1.1.7

April 3rd, 2013 by

OBIEE 11.1.1.7 was released earlier this week, and brings with it the usual delights and challenges of the Fusion Middleware (FMW) platform. Because OBIEE is part of Fusion Middleware, and because it is made up of OBIEE-specific components (such as the BI Server) and FMW-generic components (such as Web Logic domains), the upgrade documentation isn’t quite so simple as it could be in a standalone product.

There are two options for upgrading to OBIEE 11.1.1.7 from an earlier release of 11g:

  1. Out-of-Place”, which in the olden days of software was called “reinstallation”. A brand new copy of OBIEE is installed, and the relevant configuration files (RPD, web cat, and so on) are migrated to the new installation, and then the old one decommissioned.
  2. In-Place” – OBIEE is upgraded where it resides, and what was a 11.1.1.6 (or .3 or .5) OBIEE then becomes 11.1.1.7.
In-place upgrade is not possible if you installed OBI using the Simple Install option

There are pros and cons to each approach, including:

  1. In-place upgrade are big bang, where as out-of-place lets you migrate in a phased manner if you want to. Depending on the scale of the changes in the upgrade, or the amount of regression testing you want to do, this may be a factor
  2. In 11.1.1.3 -> 11.1.1.5 -> 11.1.1.6, the in-place upgrade was complex and infamous for being buggy. From what I’ve seen of two separate in-place 11.1.1.6 -> 11.1.1.7 upgrades it is simple to do and with no problems discovered yet.
  3. An out of-place upgrade is ‘safer’ because you are just doing a reinstallation. When you do an in-place upgrade you are trusting the tools to not fail and/or damage your current installation. The counter argument to this is that you should always have backups, and in doing an out-of-place upgrade you may yourself make mistakes or have trouble migrating content

Christian Screen wrote about the advantages of an out of place upgrade, but I think some of these could be less relevant now. Given the simplicity of the in-place upgrade, out-of-place strikes me as more complex and risky.

Getting started

Take a full backup of your OBIEE installation. You do take backups, right? If not, now is a very good time to start, upgrade or not. See the backup documentation, here

Next, regardless of upgrade method, you need to download the complete OBIEE 11.1.1.7 installers for your platform, from here

Out-of-place upgrade

The installation process for 11.1.1.7 is identical to previous versions (except you now have the option to install Essbase too).

Once you have installed 11.1.1.7, you migrate your RPD, web catalog, security configuration and component configuration over from your existing installation. You also need to think if you want to keep any of your RCU table content (Usage Tracking, Event Polling, etc), and manually migrate this, watching out for if the RCU table definitions have changed.

In-place upgrade

An in-place upgrade will upgrade your existing 11g (whether 11.1.1.3, 11.1.1.5, or 11.1.1.6) to 11.1.1.7. It is documented here: Moving from 11.1.1.3, 11.1.1.5, or 11.1.1.6 to 11.1.1.7.

In-place upgrade is not possible if you installed OBI using the Simple Install option

I have tested it on Linux and Windows, from both 11.1.1.6.2 BP1 and 11.1.1.6.9, to 11.1.1.7.
Be aware that previous in-place upgrades (11.1.1.3 -> 11.1.1.5 -> 11.1.1.6) had issues, and I have not tested in-place upgrading 11.1.1.3/11.1.1.5 -> 11.1.1.7.

The outline of an in-place upgrade is as follows:
1. Do a Software Only Install of 11.1.1.7, into the existing installation
2. Run the Patch Set Assistant to update the RCU schemas for 11.1.1.7
3. Run the Configuration Assistant to update the BI domain

This can be done using the GUI tools, or scripted using response files.

In-place upgrade using the GUI, step by step

  1. Shutdown the BI stack (WLS Admin Server, Managed Server, Node Manager, OPMN)
  2. Run 11.1.1.7 installer (runInstaller on Linux or setup.exe on Windows)
    1. Select Software Only Install
    2. Specify the existing FMW_HOME (this should be pre-populated in the OUI installer screen)
    3. Click Next through the following screens, until the installation begins.
  3. Run the Patch Set Assistant (PSA). This is located in oracle_common/bin/ and is called psa on Linux or psa.cmd on Windows
    1. Under Available upgrades select Oracle Business Intelligence
    2. Before running the PSA you should make sure you’ve got a valid database backup (just as you should for the whole BI stack). You are given checkbox to tick to confirm you’ve taken the backup.
    3. Enter the details of the database where your existing RCU tables reside, along with a DBA-privileged user.
When specifying DB credentials, note that it is different from the RCU screens – if connecting as SYSDBA you must enter SYSDBA AS DBA (as you would if connecting from sqlplus etc)Click Connect. The PSA then brings back a list of RCU schemas; select the MDS one
    4. Complete the following screen for the BIPLATFORM schema, and continue through the PSA. Click Upgrade.
  4. Start Node Manager
    1. On Windows, this is a service
    2. On Linux, go to your FMW home and run ./wlserver_10.3/server/bin/startNodeManager.sh
  5. Start the Web Logic Administration Server (AdminServer)
    1. On Windows, go to your FMW home folder and then double click on user_projects\domains\bifoundation_domain\bin\startWebLogic.cmd
    2. On Linux, go to your FMW home and run ./user_projects/domains/bifoundation_domain/bin/startWebLogic.sh

Wait until the Admin Server is running – you should be able to login to the WLS Console at http://<yourhost>:7001/console, and the Admin Server command window will show Server started in RUNNING mode

  6. Run the Configuration Assistant
    1. The script is in the Oracle_BI1\bin folder
      1. On Windows, go to your FMW home folder and then double click on Oracle_BI1\bin\config.bat
      2. On Linux, go to your FMW home and run ./Oracle_BI1/bin/config.sh
    2. Select Update BI Domain and then enter the details of your domain.
Note on Windows, if you are using a loopback adaptor (which you should on a DHCP host such as often found on a VM) make sure the hostname that you specify is the one you have in your hosts file for the loopback IP.
  7. The Configuration Assistant will [re]start AdminServer, the managed server, and OPMN components.
  8. Flush your browser cache, and then login to OBIEE and enjoy the new version number and the sloping tabs of Fusion skin

Command-line / “Silent” in-place upgrade

The three utilities that are run to do an in-place upgrade can all be run from the commandline only, using response files to specify the values and actions.

To create a response file, you can run the utility in GUI mode and then choose the Save option on the summary screen. You can also take an existing response file and modify it to suit your target environment.

Passwords in response files

When you create a response file from the GUI, passwords are not saved in clear text.

  • In the Patch Set Assistant response file passwords are saved encrypted, so if you don’t need to change them you can leave this file unmodified. Alternatively, you can change encrypted for cleartext:

    would become

And do the same for the BIPLATFORM schema and DBA passwords in the file
  • For the Configuration Assistant response file you need to replace all instances of <SECURE VALUE> with the actual password

Step by step silent in-place upgrade

  1. Shutdown the BI stack (WLS Admin Server, Managed Server, Node Manager, OPMN)
  2. Run the Software Only install of 11.1.1.7
  3. Run the Patch Set Assistant
  4. Start Node Manager
  5. Start AdminServer

Wait until the Admin Server is running – you should be able to login to the WLS Console at http://<yourhost>:7001/console, and the Admin Server command window will show Server started in RUNNING mode
  6. Run the Configuration Assistant script.

The -waitforcompletion is optional but useful on Windows as it stops the cmd window which you launch the script from disappearing

You can download the response files used from here, or generate them yourself using the utilities in GUI mode.

In-place upgrade of a scaled-out BI domain

If you have a scaled-out (horizontal cluster) BI domain, the in-place upgrade is simple for the additional nodes. Since the domain and RCU upgrades are handled by the Configuration Assistant and Patch Set Assistant respectively, you just need to update the binaries, using the Software Only Install

On each additional node:

  1. Shutdown all WLS, OPMN
  2. Run 11.1.1.7 installer
    1. Select Software Only Install
    2. Specify existing FMW_HOME (should be pre-populated in OUI)
    3. Takes c.10 minutes
  3. Start up Managed Server, and OPMN
  4. That’s it

Known issues

Common Header no longer visible

If you don’t flush your browser cache then you can expect to see the header missing from OBIEE :

Flush your browser cache and then refresh / relogin, and it should display correctly:

Awesome, thanks a lot in the name of the community for including the response files since they are continuously missing from the documentation.

    Cheers,
    Christian

  2. Delli Says:

    Awesome

  3. saichand varanasi Says:

Thanks Robin for the wonderful post!

  4. Boris Dahav Says:

Robin, this is a perfect post on the subject. Thank you so much for writing it.

Just a little remark: Upgrade BI Domain will not work on Simple installation, so it seems that In-place upgrade is not an option for Simple Installations.

    Thank You,
    Boris

  5. Bruno Says:

This doc is gold for me. First test of upgrade from 11.1.1.5 tomorrow. Thanks a lot !

  6. Mike Sullivan Says:

Reminder to Copy the BiPublisher 32 and 64 bit executables for Microsoft Word to the proper directories when doing an inplace upgrade, or the links will download the older versions.

  7. Salih Says:

    Great post.

Can you also provide or refer to a guide for Out-of-place upgrade? I couldn’t find a document about how to migrate repository, catalog etc.

  8. Luc Says:

    Boris,

I just did an in-place upgrade without upgrade BI domain (the config assistant says you cannot do it) and it works.

  9. Don Says:

Working in an environment where we upgraded from 11.5.5 to 11.6.7. 11.6.7 seemed to break some things. Normal user behavior would cause the presentation server to crash. One thing we did was to remove the conditional logic used to navigate between analysis. This workaround seems to have eliminated the problem of the crashing server.

Wondering if anyone else is seeing problems with their 11.6.7 environment.

  10. Bruno Says:

In-place upgrade in a single installation worked 100% for me. The only weird thing is that I losted my own weblogic password. I had to logued with my user account and reapply my weblogic password

  11. Bruno Says:

Forgot my warning, the upgrade never reset my weblogic password, it’s my fault.

  12. Matt Says:

    Robin,

A huge thanks to you for writing this. I’m wondering if anyone else is having trouble doing an in-place upgrade for two horizontally scaled linux servers?

In the In-Place-Upgrade steps, we are getting stuck on this step: 6. Run the Configuration Assistant

When we press the the “Configure” button, it doesn’t seem to be doing anything. It just says “Not Started” and there does not appear to be a way to start it.

We’re working with Oracle support on this but I’m wondering if anyone else is having trouble with this step.

  13. Shruthi Says:

    Hi Mark ,

Thank you for the detail explanation . We are on 11.1.6.8 We have been facing Presentation Server Crash during dashboard navigation from one tab to another and also when clicked on action links. Will this version handle that ? Did anyone come across any such issue ? Can you please let me know .

    Thanks
    Shruthi

  14. andy Says:

Seems, there’s bug related to prompt (dashboard) prompt values. Default value seems not filled in before hitting apply button

  15. Jon Says:

I just went through the upgrade in Windows from version 11.1.1.6.7. No errors or warnings. Now when I launch analytics it says I’m running version 11.1.1.6.2 BP1.
    Any ideas of this? Strange…

  16. Jon Says:

Please ignore my last comment. Logging into the wrong test instance. Not strange just dumb!!!

  17. Adam Says:

    Hi,

I have just done this In-Place, but got stuck in Configuration Assistant, on step Update Bi Domain System.
Telling me that im using the 32 bit JVM on a 64 bit installer.
But Am upgrading a 64 bit install on a 64bit OS.
Wandering where im going wrong.. (o and its a windows 2008r2) Thoughts where i could get help ?

  18. Chris Says:

When we install OBIEE we deselect the RTD option and I’m wondering about licence issues with our OBIEE components when we patch a ‘clean’ install.
Does the patch install RTD, because there is no option to deselect this option with a software only upgrade.

  19. Ken Says:

I’m attempting an software install upgrade from 11.1.1.6.2 BP1 to 11.1.1.7. During the install, when I get to the “upgrade” button and press it, it just hangs. I’ve left it for over an hour hoping it would finish, but it never does. I have to kill it. Any ideas? I’m stuck.

  20. Shreyas Says:

    Hi Mark,

As Shruthi states, we are on 11.1.1.6.9 and too are facing the presentation server crash along with a 500 Error. Has that been fixed in this release, OR is there a fix for that issue as a seperate release?

    Regards,

    Shreas.

  21. Ajay Says:

I installed OBIEE 11g in a simple install and patched to 11.1.1.6.7. Now I tried to follow you directions and suceeded until the config assistant step where I get an error message as follows: “BI System is created through “Simple Install” option which is not supported for scale out and update domain”
How can I configure the domain?

  22. Mike H. Says:

    Matt,

Exactly the same problem. Any resolution?

  23. Bruno Says:

First in place upgrade problem when I upgrade my pre-prod environment who is my first scale out environment. After the upgrade I was unable to browse the welcome page of EM, Console or Analytics.
    I also had
BEA-002611 Hostname “hostname.domain.com”, maps to multiple IP addresses: 10.170.133.100, 0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1

My solution was in this wonderful article http://www.rittmanmead.com/2012/08/obiee-fmw-and-networking-on-dhcp-hosts/

Change the ip for the hostname on the FMW_SECURITY_SERVICE_URL line in
nqsconfig.ini and very important to reboot all the server.

I tried to update from 11.1.1.6.7 using GUI tools. Everything except the configuration assistant succeeded. My bi_server1 cannot be started. It starts in Admin mode or says FAILED_NOT_RESTARTABLE.

    Any suggestions?

  29. Sreekanth Gopinathan Says:

    Robin,

I have installed Oracle BI Publisher 10.1.3.4.2 in Standalone mode and integrated with Siebel 7.8.2.14 using the standard web services method.

I would like to install OBIEE 11.1.1.7 on the same box(Windows server) as the BIP standalone installation. Do you see any conflicts for such a setup? The standlone BIP uses OC4J, what are my options to have such a parallel installation on the same box?

I do not want to upgrade to 11g right away as Siebel 7.8 may not be supporting 11g as of now, not sure about it.

    Please advice.

    Thanks in advance.

  32. stst Says:

wired, after in-place upgrade from 11.1.1.5 BP2 to 11.1.1.7, all dashboard layout changed, it collapse to the left half on screen,

    other things can work fine,

    anyone can help?

  33. MP Says:

After an in-place upgrade 11.1.1.5 BP2 -> 11.1.1.7 we are seeing the same issue as stst above. Dashboard layout is only half the screen and so are the answers reports.

Any clue anyone facing this issue and have a resolution?

    Thanks!

  34. karl Says:

In regards to the half screen prompts and reports/dashboard: I have run into this and it is likely do to the custom branding you have done. I would recommend starting over with the 11.1.1.7 branding ‘templates’ and reapply your customizations. Or just remove you branding to verify that this is the issue.

  35. MP Says:

    Thanks Karl,
I actually resolved this issue by just removing our custom skins and style settings in the instanceconfig.xml.

    Thanks!

  36. Robin Moffatt Says:

Thanks, I have updated the post to reflect this

  37. Sohrab Niramwalla Says:

Following this guide in trying an in-place upgrade of 11.1.1.6 to 11.1.1.7, I ran into a hiccup running the PSA. My MDS and BIPLATFORM schemas are on MS SQL server, and the BIPLATFORM schema upgrade failed citing NULL errors in Oracle_BI1\bifoundation\update\11.1.1.7.0\11.1.1.6.0\mssql\bi\upgradebi.sql.

In taking a look at the SQL script in question, I noticed that though the statements had GO in between them (IIRC, SQL scripts in the RCU earlier than 11.1.1.5 had semicolons) there was no whitespace between the GO and the following statements. I had to edit the upgradebi.sql script and put in newlines after the GOs and then reran the PSA. This resulted in a successful upgrade.

    Thanks for the guide!

  38. Tomas Says:

Hi, I also have the problem with dashboard prompts not working for many reports. Is there any workaround/solution?

    Thanks

  39. Sathani Says:

    Hi Tomas,

I got same issue after inplace upgrade from 11.1.1.6.7 to X.7.0
issue is: custom styles and messages,
these could not get upgrade so
go to console >Deployments click on AnalyticRes
then see path: it look like

    /app/obieeshared/obiee11g/obiee_custom/analyticsRes

here remove all custom styles and messages except WEB-INF file and restartall servicess and check hope your issue resolved

    Thanks

I have completed the upgrade to 11.1.1.7.1 and downloaded the Oracle Business Intelligence Developer Client Tools Installer (11.1.1.7.0).
When I open the rpd I get the following error ‘[nQSError: 46036] Internal Assertion: Condition m_pFile->Read(bytes, sizeof(data)) == sizeof(data),
    file server\objectmodel\Src\SORpArchivePersistStream.cpp, line 381.

I found Doc ID 1568337.1 which describes this error and it says As an example: Let’s say the Administration tool version was 11.1.1.7.0 and RPD was 325.
You will need to download the new version of the Administration Tool from the Analytics Home page. Upgrading the Admin tool to 11.1.1.7.1 solved the issue.

Do you know where I can find the 11.1.1.7.1 version of Oracle Business Intelligence Developer Client Tools Installer?

I found the method to get the 11.1.1.7.1 version:
Obtain the Oracle BI EE Plus Client Installer file (biee_client_install.exe) using one of the following methods:

Access the Oracle BI EE Plus Client Installer file from the Oracle BI home page by selecting the Download BI Desktop Tools link and choosing Oracle BI Client Installer. You can display the Oracle BI home page from the following URL:

    http://:/analytics/saw.dll?bieehome

    For example:

    http://computer1:9704/analytics/saw.dll?bieehome

Access biee_client_install.exe in your Oracle home and transfer a copy of it to the computer where you want to install the client tools. You can find biee_client_install.exe in the following location:

    ORACLE_HOME/clients/biserver
