Installing Oracle 9iR2 On RedHat Enterprise Server 3.0 and Fedora

Looking to install Oracle 9i Release 2 on RedHat's new Enterprise Server 3.0?

Werner Puschitz has produced a comprehensive guide to getting 9i Release 2 installed and running on RHES 3.0, including a number of useful hints such as;

  • make sure you download and install the 9.2.0.4 patchset
  • relink gcc so that the older gcc will be used during the Oracle installation
  • how to deal with the " __libc_wait symbol" issue
  • what to do when you get the "Error in invoking target install of makefile /opt/oracle/product/9.2.0/ctx/lib/ins_ctx.mk" error

Werner's been running Oracle on Redhat Linux for some time now, so take a look at the Oracle on Redhat Linux Portal for a comprehensive set of tips and tricks for running Oracle 9i on all versions of Redhat from 7.1, RHAS 2.1 right through to RHES 3.0. There's also a useful guide to setting up RAC on RHAS 2.1 which I'll be taking a look at when I finally get round to setting up my RAC testbed...

If anyone's feeling particularly adventurous, there's a thread on the OTN Linux Forum regarding installing Oracle 9iR2 on Fedora Code Release 1. Although Fedora shouldn't really be considered 'production ready' it looks like an install is possible, with just a change to the JRE used by the installer, and the download and installation of the 9.2.0.4 patchset.
