This seminar-style course teaches delegates the fundamentals of designing an Oracle data warehouse. The first part of the course focuses on logical design and data modelling. Next, physical design for an Oracle data warehouse is considered before wrapping up the course with sections on managing the data warehouse and its data.
Topics covered in this 3-day course include:
- Introduction, what is a data warehouse, data mart, real-time etc
- Historical perspectives on data warehouse design, Kimball and, Inmon methodologies, logical design principles, a best practice approach for Oracle data warehousing
- Dimensional modelling, hierarchies and attributes, alternate hierarchies, what is so special about time, slowly changing dimensions.
- Physical design, Hardware: single machines and clusters, CPU, disk - SAN, NAS, RAID, etc, designing for recovery
- Physical design: Oracle database structures, tables, indexes, constraints, partitions, compression, dimension objects
- Loading the data in: SQL/Loader, data pump, change data capture, external tables, replication, SQL & PL/SQL, Oracle ETL tools (OWB, ODI)
- Reporting and Analysis in SQL - aggregates, materialized views and query rewrite, SQL extensions
- OLAP and other optional technologies
- Data warehouse management - performance management, summary management, data life-cycle management
- Discussion & Delegate Questions
This course is delivered by Peter Scott, a consultant with many years experience of building and supporting terabyte scale data warehouses for a variety of customers. The course includes slides and delegate notes, and can be delivered on-site or through partner organizations.
