Which Versions Of Linux Work With Oracle RAC?
"I was wondering what Oracle 9i RAC could be installed on. I had a look around and it seams to be tested on Redhat linux enterprise. The current version is is 3 and there are WS,AS & ES version. I could download and compile & build, but it's loads of work, can I use the WS version?"
I've not yet heard of RAC working with RHES 3.0, in either of the versions; this doesn't mean it doesn't work, there's just not any publicly available 'howto's that I've found. The best documented Linux and RAC combination is RedHat Advanced Server 2.1, and the best resources for working with this are;
- Install Guide : Oracle RAC on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server (OTN Document)
- Werner Puschitz's 'Installing Oracle 9i Real Application Cluster On Red Hat Advanced Server 2.1'
- Also, Don Burleson has written up a general RAC and Linux page which you might find useful
My understanding from reading Don Burleson's article is that RedHat 7.1 will also work with RAC, which you should be able to download for free from RedHat's FTP site.
It's also worth considering SuSE and United Linux; Suse Linux Enterprise Server 7.0 reportedly works with RAC, as does United Linux 1.0 (of which SuSE SLES-8 is a version), and you can download a developer version through an arrangement with OTN.
